Are you new to GS1 Standards or need a refresher? This online certificate training covers the foundational aspects of globally unique product and location identification, barcoding with GS1 Standards, and the basics of data sharing. Learn how to request that your NDC (National Drug Code) Labeler Code be included as part of your GS1 US-issued GS1 Company Prefix; how to use your GS1 Company Prefix to create GS1 identifiers for products and locations; build trade item hierarchies; and use the most common GS1 barcodes in accordance with industry best practices. You will also gain a basic understanding of the Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®) and Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) for sharing data, as well as the Package Measurement Rules and the GTIN Management Standard to help you apply GS1 Standards properly to your business processes.

Equipped with the knowledge of GS1 Foundations, you can:

  • Lower product returns and rejections resulting from inaccurate product data
  • Reduce scanning for linear and 2D barcodes that could result in unusable product

The GS1 Foundations for Healthcare Online Certificate course consists of the following self-paced modules:

  • Course 2a: How to Use Your Company Prefix for NDC (Applicable to Regulated Pharma Only)
  • Course 2b: How to Use Your Company Prefix for UPC/EAN®
  • Course 3: Introduction to Global Location Number (GLN)
  • Course 4: How to Create and Manage Global Trade Item Number (GTINs)
  • Course 5: GTIN Management Standard
  • Course 6: How to Barcode Products
  • Course 7: Introduction to the Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®)
  • Course 8: Introduction to Inventory Visibility and Track & Trace (EPCIS)
  • Course 9: Package Measurement Rules

Time duration: Approximate time to complete the series is seven hours. An assessment is administered during the online training to test knowledge of the key takeaways. You will have unlimited access to the course for one year from the time of purchase.

This certificate training is designed for pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesale distributors, and repackagers using GS1 Standards for the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA).

The DSCSA* can be viewed as a three-phase implementation over 10 years. Phase 1 involves supply chain participants sharing lot-level, chain-of-ownership data starting in 2015. Phase 2 involves item-level identification and marking starting in 2017. And Phase 3 involves the electronic exchange of chain-of-ownership data to support serialized item traceability back to the product origin starting in 2023.
