Barcodes Available in GS1 US Data Hub

Barcodes Available in GS1 US Data Hub

GS1 US Data Hub provides barcode images based on these three attributes of a specific Product Detail Record:
- Product Industry;
- Packaging Level;
- "Can this item be purchased by the consumer" check box;

Also, the barcode option may change if you select a different Application Area on the Barcode screen.

This article explains which barcodes images are available in GS1 US Data Hub from the "Barcode" tab when you are viewing a product detail record.  As noted, some barcodes can be downloaded as PNG files, or directly into label templates. It's not possible to download barcode images for multiple products in bulk.

UPC-A:
This barcode is used primarily at retail POS and encodes only the GTIN. After you share product/GTIN/barcode data with your trading partners, they can then populate their databases so their point-of-sale scanners can retrieve the product data using the GTIN within the scanned barcode.

ITF-14:

This barcode is used to identify units such as cases and pallets, and is mainly seen in general distribution. The ITF-14 is typically printed on corrugated material. POS scanners cannot read the ITF-14 barcode. In GS1 US Data Hub, the ITF-14 barcode only encodes the GTIN-12 or GTIN-14 in a 14-digit format.

GS1-128:

The GS1-128 barcode encodes GTINs and is commonly used to identify units such as cases. In GS1 US Data Hub, this barcode encodes the GTIN-12 or GTIN-14 in a 14-digit format, but specific additional information can also be encoded, such as Best Before Date, Batch/Lot Number, or Serial Number - using GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) - to support business needs throughout your supply chain.

To encode this information, click the Barcode tab, select GS1-128 from Barcode Type, then select the desired AIs at the bottom of the screen. Read the Create a Case and Generate a Barcode article for more details on adding AIs to the GS1-128 barcode.

GS1 DataBar Stacked Omnidirectional:
This barcode is typically found on hard-to-mark consumer goods, such as loose produce, (apples, pears, etc.) and ensures reliable scanning at the retail POS. For the Regulated Healthcare industry, this barcode is sometimes used on unit dose pharmaceuticals. It is not recommended for any higher level packaging item. GS1 US Data Hub Product Lifecycle User Guide

When you first create a new product in GS1 US Data Hub, the product is in the Draft status. When you save this product and assign a GTIN, it moves to the PreMarket status. You can then generate a "For Placement Only" (FPO) barcode for packaging design purposes. When you're ready to share this product with the marketplace, you can move the product to the In Use status. You can then generate a barcode that can be placed on products.

Selecting the Status for a Product

3 January 2020

Selecting the Status for a Product

To understand the benefits of the PreMarket status before changing a product's status to In Use, view the PreMarket vs. In Use module in the GS1 US University Learning Management System (sign in required). Here's a summary:

PreMarket Status:

Think of this status as the “Pre-production stage.”  The GTIN has been assigned, and it cannot be removed. However, you can "retract" the GTIN, so that this GTIN can be used again after 12 months.

While the product is in PreMarket status, you can modify product attributes - except for Packaging Level, which cannot be changed. In the PreMarket status, you can click the “Barcode” tab to generate a “For Placement Only” - or FPO - barcode symbol. This watermark barcode symbol is NOT the final artwork for your packaging. The FPO watermark prevents the barcode symbol from being scanned at Point of Sale (POS). The purpose of the FPO barcode is to provide you with a PNG file you can send to your packaging designer, to ensure it displays properly on your product artwork.

Before You Move to In Use Status:

Before you change the product’s status from the PreMarket to In Use status, here are three questions to consider:

  1. Are the product attributes and packaging final?
  2. Are you ready to produce and sell this product to consumers?
  3. Are you ready to share this information with trading partners?

If you answered “Yes” to each of the questions, you’re ready to change the status to In Use and click “Save."

In Use Status:

When you are ready to launch your product into the marketplace, change the status to In Use. Think of In Use as your “Production” stage. The product and the assigned GTIN are now permanently linked to each other. If several of the product’s key attributes change, such as net contents, you will be required to create a new product and assign a new GTIN.

In GS1 US Data Hub, when you change the status to In Use, you can now generate a scannable barcode image that you can download. You can also export the barcode definitions to share with a printer.

Is this item variable measure?

22 February 2019

Is this item variable measure?

When creating a new product on the GS1 US Data Hub Product | Create page, you will see a check box, "Is this item variable measure?" - if you check this box, you will NOT be able to generate a UPC-A barcode for this product detail record.

In addition, a GTIN-14 will be generated, beginning with the number nine (9). The digit 9 is in the indicator digit position, indicating that this item is a variable measure trade item that cannot be NOT scanned at retail checkout / Point-of-Sale. For more details on variable measure trade items, please refer to the GS1 General Specifications.

Example of a Product that Is NOT a Variable Measure Trade Item:

A tomato sauce product line that is sold in three “varied” jar sizes (20 oz., 40 oz., and 60 oz.) is not a variable measure trade item. In this example, each jar "size" is a fixed measure trade item and would receive its own GTIN.

Even if there are slight weight variations during production (such as overfill), this still does not make the product a variable measure trade item. The declared net weight to the consumer is always the same, regardless of overfill.  These are fixed measure trade items, which are always produced in the same version and composition (e.g., type, size, weight, contents, and design).

Examples of Products that ARE Variable Measure Trade Items:

Unlike a fixed measure trade item, a variable measure trade item has at least one characteristic that varies, and the item may be sold at any point in the supply chain without one of these characteristics predefined:

- Weight
- Dimension (size)
- Quantity contained
- Volume information

Variable measure trade items scanned in general distribution are identified with a GTIN-14 beginning with ‘9’.

For example, a wheel of cheese (not intended for Point-of-Sale) is a variable measure trade item, as it is ordered by a GTIN-14 and includes the indicator digit 9. It’s cut and packaged in variable weight packages in the deli department and sold by weight.

Another example is bulk chicken breast (not intended for Point-of-Sale), which is ordered by a GTIN-14 and includes the indicator digit 9. It’s then packaged into individual variable weight packages and sold by weight.
